Dual or Single Channel Memory Mode ?

Dual or Single Channel Memory Mode ?

Dear Forum Members,

We recently bought a 16GB Ram upgrade from Crucial for our Dell INSPIRON 15 (7570) laptop which came with 8GB RAM installed.

Crucial advised on its website that the memory was compatible and customer support reconfirmed this by stating that it did not matter that the two RAM module were different in size.

We have just noticed the following anomaly:

- The program CPU-Z advises that we have 24GB of ‘Dual Channel’ memory installed on the laptop.
- When looking at the UEFI for the laptop, it points out that the system is running in ‘Single Channel’ memory mode.

These are our questions:

- does this make sense?

- what mode does our system operate in, 'dual' or 'single' channel?

- how can we switch the laptop back to ‘Dual Channel’ memory mode?

Many thanks for your help.

Kind regards,

Re: Dual or Single Channel Memory Mode ?

In order to take advantage of dual channel mode, both memory modules need to be the same size.   There is no way to re-enable dual channel mode with the current configuration.

Technically dual channel mode will perform faster in certain situations, but in reality performance improvements are negligible for most workloads.  You will notice more performance improvements from the extra memory.  Besides if you later find you still need more memory, then you are already halfway to maximum.

I wouldn't worry about it and would just enjoy the extra memory.
